Frequently Asked Questions

Find fast, reliable answers about planning your perfect Egyptian journey, from visas and local safety to custom Nile Cruises.

Planning & Booking

What is the best time of year to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is from October to April when temperatures are cool and pleasant (averaging 15°C to 25°C / 59°F to 77°F). This is the peak tourist season.

  • Peak Season (Oct–Apr): Ideal for exploring the Pyramids, Luxor, Aswan, and embarking on a Nile Cruise.
  • Shoulder Season (May & Sep): Great for avoiding heavy crowds while enjoying manageable heat.
  • Summer Season (Jun–Aug): Extremely hot, often exceeding 40°C (104°F) in Upper Egypt. However, Red Sea coastal resorts like Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh remain highly popular year-round due to cooling sea breezes.
How far in advance should I book my Egypt tour?

We strongly recommend booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance.

If you are traveling during the peak season (October to April) or holiday periods like Christmas and Easter, early booking is absolutely critical to secure availability for premium 5-star Nile Cruises, luxury Dahabiyas, and highly-rated domestic flights (which frequently sell out).

Can I customize an existing tour package?

Absolutely! Every tour package at Travel Joy Egypt is 100% customizable.

Visas & Entry Requirements

Do I need a visa to enter Egypt?

Yes, most international travelers require a visa to enter Egypt.

  • Visa on Arrival: Citizens from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and all EU nations can purchase a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at Cairo International Airport.
  • Cost: Exactly $25 USD (payable in cash only—USD, EUR, or GBP are accepted, but exact change in USD is preferred).
  • E-Visa: Alternatively, you can apply for an official e-Visa online through the Egyptian Government portal at least 7 days prior to departure.

  • Fast-track the purchase of your entry visa.

Safety & Local Culture

Is Egypt safe for tourists?

Yes, Egypt is a highly secure and safe destination for tourists.

Tourism is a cornerstone of the Egyptian economy, and the government takes visitor safety extremely seriously. Major tourist sites, hotels, airports, and cruise ships are heavily guarded by specialized Tourism Police.

When booking with Travel Joy Egypt, you are accompanied by certified local experts and transported in private, registered vehicles, ensuring you feel comfortable, respected, and secure throughout your entire journey.

What should female travelers wear in Egypt?

Egypt is a majority-Muslim country with conservative cultural norms. While female tourists are not required to cover their hair, dressing modestly shows respect and deflects unwanted attention.

  • In Cities (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan): Wear loose-fitting, opaque clothing that covers your shoulders, cleavage, and knees. Maxi skirts, wide-leg trousers, and T-shirts are excellent choices.
  • Mosques: You must cover your hair with a scarf, and your arms and legs must be fully covered.
  • Red Sea Resorts (Hurghada, Dahab): Dress codes are entirely relaxed. Bikinis, shorts, and sundresses are completely normal on the beach and within resort grounds.
What is the tipping culture (Baksheesh) in Egypt?

Tipping, known locally as 'Baksheesh', is a deeply ingrained part of the Egyptian service economy.

  • Everyday Tipping: Keep small Egyptian Pound notes (20 EGP to 50 EGP) handy for bathroom attendants, bellboys, and restaurant staff (usually 10% is expected even if a service charge is included).
  • Guides and Drivers: If you are happy with their service, a standard tip is $15–$20 USD per day for a guide, and $10 USD per day for a driver.
  • Note: Some premium Travel Joy packages can be tailored to include all expected tipping in advance for a hassle-free experience.

Nile Cruises & Transportation

What is the difference between a standard Nile Cruise and a Dahabiya?

The Nile River can be sailed in two primary ways, depending on your preferred travel style:

  • 5-Star Nile Cruise: A large, multi-deck floating hotel carrying 100+ guests. They operate on motor power, run on fixed schedules (usually 3 or 4 nights), and feature large sundeck pools, buffet dining, and evening entertainment.
  • Luxury Dahabiya: A traditional, twin-masted wooden sailing boat carrying only 10-16 guests. Dahabiyas rely entirely on wind power (towed by a tugboat if wind is low), offering an incredibly quiet, exclusive, and personalized experience. They can dock at smaller islands and hidden temples that massive cruise ships cannot reach.
How do we travel between Cairo and Luxor or Aswan?

Given the vast distance between Northern Egypt (Cairo) and Upper Egypt (Luxor/Aswan), there are two main options:

  • Domestic Flight (Highly Recommended): A quick 1-hour flight operated by EgyptAir, Nile Air, or Air Cairo. It maximizes your sightseeing time and is the most comfortable option. Travel Joy Egypt books these flights seamlessly as part of your package.
  • Overnight Sleeper Train: A 10 to 12-hour journey. While it saves the cost of one night's hotel, it is much slower and the sleeping cabins are compact.
