Yes. Egypt is one of the best places on Earth to see the 2027 solar eclipse on 2 August, with totality following the Nile corridor and lasting a little over six minutes near Luxor. Aswan is inside the path too, while Cairo gets only a partial eclipse. Luxor is the best base for most people, a Luxor-to-Aswan cruise is the best way to build a full trip around the date, and the good rooms and cabins will go first.
Why the 2027 solar eclipse in Egypt is worth the trip
The total eclipse crosses northern Africa and the Middle East, and Upper Egypt sits close to the point of greatest eclipse. Around Luxor, totality lasts a little over six minutes. That is exceptionally long; most eclipses give you two or three. Durations and clock times differ from town to town, so check your chosen location against an eclipse path table, such as the Wikipedia entry on the eclipse, before you commit.

The weather is on your side as well. August air in Upper Egypt is dry, cloud is rare, and the sun will be high, so there are no horizon or tree problems to plan around. Dust haze is possible. Cloud is seldom the gamble it is in Europe or North America.
Cairo and Giza fall outside the path. They get a deep partial eclipse, which is interesting but a different event, so a Pyramids-only trip is not an eclipse trip. We'd add Cairo before or after, never on the day itself.
One trap: Egypt may be on summer clock time that day. Look for the local clock time of totality, not a UTC figure lifted from a headline.
August is normally low season because of the heat. The eclipse changes that for one week, with demand coming from eclipse travellers rather than the usual winter crowd, so don't judge availability by what you'd normally find in summer.
Luxor, Aswan or a Nile cruise: which base to choose

| Base | Length of totality (relative) | Best for | Heat and shade | Booking pressure | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxor (east or west bank hotel) | Longest | Most travellers; temples plus eclipse | Very hot; hotel terraces and pools help | High, most rooms overall | Our default recommendation |
| Aswan (hotel or Nile-side) | A little shorter than Luxor; check the path table | Quieter setting, granite and islands | Hotter and more compact | Tighter, fewer Nile-view rooms | Good if you accept a slightly shorter show |
| Nile cruise, Luxor to Aswan | Inside the path along the route | Eclipse plus a full Nile trip | Sun deck has no midday shade; cabins are cool | High, finite fleet | Best combined trip, if mooring is confirmed |
| Dahabiya | Depends on where it is on the day | Small groups wanting quiet | Open decks, limited air-conditioning | Highest, very few berths | Atmospheric, but check timing carefully |
| Lake Nasser or Abu Simbel | Check the path position first | Specialists only | Remote and exposed | Limited | Not the obvious choice |
Luxor wins on length of totality, hotel choice and ease. Cairo to Luxor is about 1 hour by air, and a great many temples sit within reach.
Aswan suits people who want fewer crowds and don't mind a slightly shorter show. Luxor to Aswan is about 3–3.5 hours by road.
A cruise moves you through the path by day, but the ship has to be in a sensible position on eclipse day, so direction and mooring matter. A dahabiya sails slowly and has far fewer cabins, so it sells out sooner.
Abu Simbel is famous, which doesn't make it a good eclipse site. Check the path position before planning anything there. From Aswan it's 3.5–4 hours by road or a 45-minute flight, which is a poor use of eclipse day.
Watching from Luxor and Aswan on land
Luxor splits in two. The east bank has Karnak, Luxor Temple and most of the hotels and restaurants. The west bank has Hatshepsut's temple, the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Kings, with more open ground and a desert backdrop. We'd base on the west bank for open horizons and fewer buildings, and on the east bank if convenience matters more.

Be realistic about temple access. Opening hours, crowd limits and permissions are set by the authorities and can change, so nobody can honestly promise you a front-row spot at a named temple this far ahead. What we do is agree a viewing spot with your Egyptologist guide and confirm it close to the date. Our Luxor tours are built around that kind of flexibility.
The practical pick is a spot with clear sky, a little shade for the hour either side, and a short walk to the car. A hotel rooftop or terrace works well. In that heat, plenty of people will prefer it to open ground.
Aswan has Philae, Elephantine Island, the Nubian Museum and the felucca boats on the river. It's hotter and more compact than Luxor, and it has fewer rooms, so Nile-view hotels will tighten up fast. If Aswan appeals, start with our Aswan tours.
Stay 3–4 nights in one place rather than hopping about on eclipse day. Do the temples early, rest through the heat, and be in position well before first contact. Luxor and Aswan together make a good 5–7 day Upper Egypt trip, with Cairo added at either end.
Watching the 2027 eclipse from a Nile cruise
A cruise carries you through the path while you sleep in the same cabin, with a guide at Edfu and Kom Ombo along the way. A Luxor to Aswan sailing usually runs 3–4 nights, and our Luxor to Aswan cruises show the options. Place eclipse day in the middle of the sailing rather than on embarkation or disembarkation morning, when schedules are least forgiving.

Ask any operator three things: where the ship will be moored at totality, whether guests can be on deck, and what happens if the schedule shifts. Don't assume a standard itinerary already accounts for the eclipse. Many won't.
The sun deck gives the widest view but no shade at midday in August, so pack for full sun. Cabin balconies usually frame a narrow slice of sky, and with the sun high that slice may miss it entirely. Check the angle.
From the river you'll have palms and fields on both banks, with desert close behind, and you'll see the light on the water change as the partial phase builds.
Lake Nasser sailings run on different routes and timing, so they aren't a like-for-like swap for a Nile cruise; our guide to Nile versus Lake Nasser cruises covers the differences. Either way, the cruise fleet is finite and cabins on the right dates will be the first inventory to go. A dahabiya has even fewer berths.

When to book: a timeline from now to August 2027

- Now to end of 2026: secure Luxor hotel rooms, Nile cruise cabins and Aswan Nile-view rooms. This is the best moment for choice. Pick free-cancellation terms where you can.
- January to March 2027: book international flights and the Cairo to Luxor flight (about 1 hour), plus your guide and private driver. Choose now if Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids go before or after the eclipse.
- April to May 2027: confirm the eclipse-day plan with your guide, arrange travel insurance, and check vaccinations with your own health service.
- June to July 2027: sort the visa, which is about USD 30 single entry for many nationalities, by e-visa or on arrival. Check the official portal before you travel. Buy and test your eclipse glasses.
- The final weeks: settle a hydration plan, a backup viewing spot, and a plan for traffic and crowds.

August heat and what eclipse day will be like
June to August is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, often above 40°C. Totality lands around midday or the early afternoon, close to the hottest part of the day, so there is no cool window. Plan for it.

Visit temples and tombs at opening time. Take a long break indoors from late morning. Then head to the viewing spot in good time before first contact. No site visits in the hours around the eclipse.
Wear loose, light clothing with long sleeves, and bring a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, plenty of water and electrolyte sachets. If your spot is open ground, a small folding stool or mat is worth the weight. Keep valuables to a minimum.
Children and older travellers feel heat faster. Choose a shaded or air-conditioned base within a short walk and keep the day short.
The partial phase builds for roughly an hour or more before totality. The light flattens, shadows sharpen, and in the final minute the daylight drops fast. The air cools noticeably, and birds go quiet or roost.
During totality you'll see the corona, possibly bright planets and stars, and a sunset glow all round the horizon. Then comes the diamond ring and the partial phase again. It's brief. Look up, not at a screen.
Expect heavy traffic on the Luxor bridges and west bank roads, and busy hotel rooftops. Leave early, stay put after totality and let the roads clear before heading back.
Settle beforehand if you'll photograph or just watch. For six minutes, we'd watch for most of it.
Safe eclipse viewing checklist
- Use eclipse glasses or handheld viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, bought from a reputable seller well before the trip. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe. The solar viewer article explains the standard.
- Check glasses for scratches or holes before use. Throw away damaged ones.
- Wear them throughout every partial phase.
- Look with the naked eye only while the sun is fully covered. Put the glasses back on the instant the first bright edge returns.
- Never look at the sun through binoculars, a telescope or a camera without a proper solar filter fitted at the front.
- Fit a front solar filter to cameras and phones for the partial phases. Never point a bare lens at the sun.
- Supervise children, and make sure everyone has working glasses and knows when to remove them.
- Pack a spare pair per person, since glasses get lost or sat on.
- Agree a signal with your guide or group for the start and end of totality, so no one has to guess.
- Get the local clock times for first contact, totality and last contact at your exact location from an eclipse path table.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to watch the 2027 solar eclipse in Egypt?
Luxor, for the longest totality, a little over six minutes, and the widest choice of hotels and viewing spots. Aswan is a calmer second choice with slightly shorter totality. A Luxor-to-Aswan Nile cruise is best if you want the eclipse built into a full trip, provided the ship's position on the day is confirmed.

Can you see the 2 August 2027 total eclipse from Cairo or the Pyramids?
Not in totality. Cairo and Giza are outside the path and see a partial eclipse only. For totality you need to be in Upper Egypt, so fly to Luxor, about 1 hour from Cairo, and see Cairo and the Pyramids before or after the eclipse rather than on the day.
How early should I book a hotel or Nile cruise for the eclipse?
Now, in October 2026, is the best time. Luxor hotels, Aswan Nile-view rooms and cruise cabins for the right dates will go first, and dahabiyas have the fewest berths. Choose flexible or free-cancellation terms where possible, then book flights in early 2027.
Is Egypt too hot to visit in August for the eclipse?
It's very hot in Luxor and Aswan, often above 40°C, and totality falls around midday or early afternoon. It's manageable with planning: temples at opening time, an indoor break, a hat, loose clothing, lots of water, and a shaded or air-conditioned base near the viewing spot. Families with young children or older relatives should keep the day short.
How do I watch the eclipse safely?
Use ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses and check them for damage first. Keep them on throughout the partial phases and remove them only during the brief total phase. Fit solar filters to cameras, binoculars and telescopes, never view the sun through them unfiltered, and supervise children throughout.
