Short answer: pick Sharm El Sheikh if you want the Red Sea’s headline reefs and late nights; choose Hurghada for sandy beaches, easier snorkelling, and the best base for Luxor. We run trips to both and often split groups this way—divers and night owls to Sharm, young families and mixed interests to Hurghada. Here’s how they actually compare.

Diving and snorkelling: reefs, wrecks, and real conditions

Sharm: Ras Mohammed, Tiran, and serious viz

Sharm’s headline sites are hard to beat. Ras Mohammed National Park and the Tiran Straits deliver vertical drop-offs, schooling fish, and ripping drifts when the current runs. Visibility often sits around 25–40 m. House reefs can be excellent but many hotels have coral shelves, so you enter via a jetty straight into deep water—fantastic if you’re a confident swimmer, less so for toddlers.

Wreck lovers chase the SS Thistlegorm from here. It’s a very early start and a long day on the boat, with 2–3 hours each way on the water in normal conditions. Typical costs: a two-dive boat day runs roughly $70–110 including tanks and weights; park fees and equipment rental add around $10–25.

Hurghada: Giftun and easygoing seas

Hurghada wins for relaxed snorkelling and mixed-ability groups. The reefs around the Giftun Islands are bright and forgiving, with lots of shallow coral gardens. Abu Nuhas wrecks sit within reach for a cracking day out if the wind plays ball. Visibility is a touch lower than Sharm on average, but still clear enough for happy photographers.

We like it for beginners: more sandy bays, gentler boat rides, and a choice of calm lagoons. Snorkel boats are around $25–45 including lunch; a diving day is roughly $60–100. Non-swimmers can try the Sindbad Submarine or glass-bottom boats. Winter water is around 22–24°C; in August you’re in 28–30°C—bring a 3 mm suit in winter, just a rash guard in summer.

Hurghada: easier sand, happier toddlers

You’ll find more true sandy entry here, especially in central Hurghada and down towards Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi. Resorts sprawl, lawns are stroller-friendly, and waterparks are common. For little legs and pram naps, we’d pick Hurghada first. Keep reef shoes for shallow sand over shell grit, but never step on live coral.

Sharm: choose your bay carefully

Many hotels sit on fringing reef. That’s gold for snorkelling teens, but it means ladders and jetties for access. If you want sand underfoot, look at Naama Bay or parts of Sharks Bay. SOHO Square adds evening ice-skating, dancing fountains, and easy dinners without taxis.

Nightlife and dining

Sharm: later, glossier, busier on weekends

Naama Bay still pulls the crowds with bars, live music, and clubs that run late. SOHO Square is polished and easy to navigate. Expect higher drink prices than Hurghada and bigger weekend peaks when domestic travellers fly in.

Hurghada: laid-back and better value

Hurghada Marina and Sheraton Road are our go-tos for a casual night—seafood grills, shisha terraces, a few clubs, and plenty of low-key pubs. It’s cheaper on average, and taxis are straightforward. Dress codes are minimal; a light jacket in winter evenings is enough.

Getting there from Cairo and Luxor

Flights are simple to both: about 60–70 minutes from Cairo, with one-way fares often in the $60–150 range depending on season. By road, Cairo–Hurghada is roughly 5–6 hours on good highway; Cairo–Sharm is 6–7 hours via the Suez tunnel. Night driving isn’t our preference—start early instead.

From Luxor, Hurghada wins hands down: it’s about 4 hours by road, which makes a day trip to the temples very doable. Sharm has no practical overland route from Luxor for a day; you’d normally connect via Cairo by air. Seasonal direct flights sometimes appear, but we never plan around them.

Day trips and add-ons

From Hurghada

  • Luxor day trip: around 4 hours each way; Valley of the Kings, Karnak, and a felucca ride if time allows. Expect roughly $80–150 depending on group size and inclusions.
  • Sea days: Giftun sandbars (Mahmya/Orange Bay), Dolphin House, and easy snorkel reefs. See our Hurghada tours for boat options.
  • Desert: sunset quad-biking or 4x4 into the Eastern Desert, around $25–40.

From Sharm

  • Ras Mohammed & Tiran: boat days to the park and Straits are the headline trips; snorkellers are welcome alongside divers.
  • Mount Sinai & St Catherine: about 3 hours by road one way; best done overnight for sunrise on the summit.
  • Dahab: an hour up the coast for calmer cafes and shore snorkelling at the Blue Hole area (for confident swimmers only).
  • Cairo by air: about an hour’s flight for the pyramids day hit; check our Sharm El Sheikh tours for flight-inclusive options.

Who should pick Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh?

  • Pick Hurghada if you’ve got small kids, first-time snorkellers, or you want to bolt on Luxor without changing hotels.
  • Pick Sharm if reefs are the trip’s focus, you want lively nights, and you’re happy with jetty entries and occasional currents.

Practicalities: seasons, costs, and kit

  • Best months: March–June and September–November for warm water and manageable wind. July–August is hot; December–February can be breezy, with cooler evenings.
  • Extras: Marine park fees (around $5–10) and equipment rental ($10–20) are usually on top of boat prices.
  • What to bring: mask you trust, long-sleeve rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, and a 3 mm wetsuit outside peak summer. Cash for tips; cards work in malls, less so on boats.
