You can cover Egypt’s essentials in five days if you keep it tight. This 5 day Egypt itinerary hits Cairo’s headline sites, then flies you to Luxor for the pharaohs’ tombs and temples, without racing through it all. We start early, focus on what matters, and leave fluff for next time.

Your 5 day Egypt itinerary at a glance

Day 1: Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Start at opening (around 7am) to get ahead of tour buses.

  • Panoramic lookout on the Giza plateau for the classic three-pyramid view
  • Khufu (Great Pyramid) exterior, with an interior visit if you’re comfortable with steep, warm passages
  • The Sphinx enclosure
  • Afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) — fully open, with the complete Tutankhamun collection

We usually break for an early lunch nearby, then give the GEM the time it deserves — two to three hours is realistic. The GEM now holds the major collection. Camel photos are fine; we’d skip on-plateau touts and arrange a short, safe ride on the quieter fringes if you want one.

Day 2: Citadel, Islamic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili, Coptic Cairo + evening flight to Luxor (about 1 hour)

  • Salah al-Din Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali
  • Walk around Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i (two superb Mamluk complexes)
  • Khan el-Khalili for a quick, guided browse
  • Coptic Cairo: Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue
  • Optional: a focused 45–60 minute stop at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir (the “old” museum), which still operates separately from the GEM

Keep the pace deliberate, not frantic; this is where a private car earns its keep. Fly Cairo → Luxor in the early evening (about 1 hour) and check in on the East Bank. If you like structure, browse ideas on our Cairo tours page for how we stack these stops in half-day chunks.

Day 3: Luxor West Bank — Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon (plus Medinet Habu if you have the energy)

  • Valley of the Kings: three tombs on the standard ticket; add Seti I or Ramesses V/VI as premium extras if you’re keen
  • Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari
  • Colossi of Memnon brief photo stop
  • Optional: Medinet Habu (worth it — superb reliefs and quieter)

We cross the Nile early and start in the Valley before it warms up. Figure 4–5 hours on the West Bank with a coffee break. Late afternoon, back on the East Bank, Luxor Temple glows under evening light — it pairs nicely with a short stroll on the corniche. For deeper ideas and special-access options, see our Luxor tours.

Day 4: Karnak Temple at opening, Avenue of Sphinxes segment, felucca sail; evening flight Luxor → Cairo (about 1 hour)

  • Karnak Temple: Great Hypostyle Hall, Festival Hall of Thutmose III, Sacred Lake
  • Walk a short, restored section of the Avenue of Sphinxes towards Luxor Temple
  • Early afternoon felucca sail on the Nile (30–60 minutes) if the wind cooperates

Karnak deserves unhurried time; we aim for 2–3 hours. Cool down, late lunch, then the evening flight back to Cairo (about 1 hour). You’re positioned for a final morning out before departure.

Day 5: Saqqara and Dahshur — Step Pyramid of Djoser, Red and Bent Pyramids

  • Saqqara: Step Pyramid complex, with a couple of Old Kingdom mastabas for strong reliefs
  • Dahshur: go inside the Red Pyramid; view the Bent Pyramid from near its base

It’s a short drive south of the city, so we start promptly. The Red Pyramid interior involves a steep, low-ceiling descent — warm inside, bring water and a light scarf. Back in Cairo mid-afternoon for a late flight or one last dinner. If you prefer, swap this day for a deeper GEM session and more time in Tahrir’s Egyptian Museum; they’re separate collections and the contrast is worthwhile.

Practical timings, flights and costs

Best season for sightseeing is October–April. Most major sites open around 7am (earlier in peak summer) and close mid-to-late afternoon, so early starts are the trick. This plan uses two one-way domestic flights, Cairo ↔ Luxor, each about 1 hour.

As a premium private tour with 4–5* hotels, private Egyptologist guide, airport assistance, chauffeured transport and the domestic flights, expect pricing from around USD 2,250 per person (based on two sharing). Extras to consider: a Luxor hot-air balloon (around USD 160–220 per person), special-access tombs, dinners and tips. For a ready-built option, see our 5-day private package.

Key leg Typical duration When we use it in this plan
Cairo → Luxor flight About 1 hour Day 2 evening
Luxor → Cairo flight About 1 hour Day 4 evening
Luxor → Aswan (road or train) About 3.5 hours Not used here (helpful if you add days)
Luxor → Hurghada (road) About 4 hours Optional Red Sea add-on after Day 4
Cairo → Alexandria (train) About 2.5–3 hours Skip on a 5-day first trip

Packing notes: breathable layers, a hat, and modest dress for mosques (shoulders and knees covered). Inside pyramids and tombs it’s warmer; a small towel and water help. Tickets for premium tombs sell out; we secure them in advance where possible.
