7 Days in Egypt: The Perfect One-Week Itinerary

You’ve got a week. Here’s the 7 day Egypt itinerary we run when time is tight but you want the big hitters done right: two days in Cairo and Giza, then fly south for a 3-night Aswan→Luxor Nile cruise (or land stays), with Abu Simbel as an add-on if you’re up for the early start.

This plan keeps transfers lean, front-loads the headline sites, and leaves you flying home satisfied, not frazzled.

Day-by-day plan: Cairo, Aswan and a 3-night Nile cruise

Day 1: Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and Saqqara

We start early (gates open around 7am). Do the Giza Plateau before tour buses fill the parking lots. Walk or drive between the Great Pyramid, Khafre and Menkaure; the Sphinx last for photos. The Great Pyramid interior needs a separate ticket and tight quarters—worth it if you’re set on it, but skip if you’re claustrophobic. Late morning, head to Saqqara for the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the Imhotep Museum; add Dahshur’s Bent or Red Pyramid if you still have fuel. Keep small notes handy and ignore camel touts unless you actually want the ride.

Day 2: Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, and Old Cairo

The GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM on the Giza plateau is fully open and now anchors the collection, including the complete Tutankhamun treasures. We allow 3–4 hours for galleries you’ll actually remember. After lunch, we swing by the separate, still-operating Egyptian Museum in Tahrir for targeted highlights—think Narmer Palette, Yuya and Thuya, and Old Kingdom statuary. Finish in Islamic Cairo for a walk through Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street, or swap for Coptic Cairo if you prefer churches and quieter lanes. Day 3: Fly Cairo → Aswan, Philae Temple and embark

Morning flight to Aswan (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Drop bags, then take the boat to Philae Temple—granite outcrops, hawks overhead, hieroglyphs that still pop in side chapels. If time allows, see the Unfinished Obelisk or a late-afternoon Nubian village visit. Board your 3-night cruise before dinner; we favour smaller, well-run ships over flashy lobbies that don’t deliver. Day 4: Optional Abu Simbel; Aswan High Dam and Kom Ombo

Abu Simbel works either by a 45-minute flight each way or by road (about 3.5–4 hours each way, roughly 280 km). We fly when possible—quicker, and you’re back in Aswan by early afternoon. Non-Abu Simbel travellers can pair the Aswan High Dam with a lazy felucca sail. Late day, your ship reaches Kom Ombo for the temple and crocodile mummies museum. Sail overnight toward Edfu.

Day 5: Edfu Temple and sail to Luxor; Luxor Temple at night

Edfu’s Temple of Horus is the most complete in Egypt; the reliefs read like a ritual manual. After lunch on board, the cruise glides north past fields and palm groves. You’ll reach Luxor by evening—perfect for a night visit at Luxor Temple under floodlights while it’s quieter. Good photos, fewer elbows.

Day 6: Luxor West Bank, Karnak and overnight in Luxor

Disembark this morning. West Bank first: the Valley of the Kings (your basic ticket covers three tombs; add Tutankhamun or Seti I if you’re keen), the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon. Cross back to the East Bank for Karnak’s hypostyle hall and the sacred lake. We usually stay ashore tonight in Luxor—more space, better sleep—though some cruises include a final onboard night.

Day 7: Fly Luxor → Cairo and depart

• Domestic flights: Cairo→Aswan about 1 hour 20 minutes; Luxor→Cairo about 1 hour. Those two one-way hops keep the week efficient. Grouped, that’s roughly 60–85 minutes each.
• Aswan→Abu Simbel: 45-minute flight each way, or about 3.5–4 hours by road each way (~280 km).
• Site hours: most major sites open around 7am (earlier in peak summer) and close mid-to-late afternoon. Start early; heat and crowds spike by late morning.
