How Much Does a Trip to Egypt Cost? A Realistic Breakdown for 2027

How much does a trip to Egypt cost? For a private 10-day trip, plan on around USD 1,800–3,200 per person at mid-range level, covering hotels and a Nile cruise with a private guide throughout. International flights are extra. Budget trips run lower and luxury trips well above, and your hotel and cruise grade moves the total more than anything else. Egypt isn't expensive by European or US standards, but quotes differ in what they leave out, so compare them line by line.

The figures below are approximate planning ranges in USD, not quotes. They show land costs per person sharing a double room, with a private guide and driver, excluding international flights.

14 daysaround USD 1,250–2,100around USD 2,500–4,500around USD 5,600–9,800+
  • Budget: 3-star hotels and either a basic cruise cabin or no cruise at all.
  • Mid-range: 4-star hotels and a 5-star cruise ship, with a private Egyptologist.
  • Luxury: 5-star and heritage hotels with Nile or pyramid views, plus a premium cruise or dahabiya and domestic flights between cities.

The daily cost falls as trips get longer, because transfers and the cruise are fixed costs spread over more days. Solo travellers pay a single supplement, which adds a sizeable premium to the hotel portion. You can set these ranges against a real 10-day Egypt package.

So, is Egypt expensive to visit? Food and local transport are cheap, and guided sightseeing sits in the middle. The big costs are the cruise and the flights, with entry tickets close behind.

Flights to Egypt and inside the country

International flights are the most variable line, and they're rarely in a private tour price. UK and European fares are normally the cheapest because the flight is short. Economy returns from the US east coast usually cost less than from the west coast. Australia is the longest haul, typically with one stop, and the fare can rival your entire land budget. Price your own dates on a fare-comparison tool rather than trusting any average.

Timing matters. October to April is the main season, with higher fares over Christmas and New Year. August 2027 will likely push fares up as well, especially into Cairo and Luxor, because of the eclipse.

Inside Egypt, Cairo to Luxor takes about 1 hour by air. Aswan to Abu Simbel is 45 minutes by air or 3.5–4 hours by road. On a 7-day trip a domestic flight saves a full day and is usually worth paying for. Luxor to Aswan is about 3–3.5 hours by road, but we'd do it as a cruise. Always ask whether domestic flights are in a quote or priced separately.

Adding Jordan raises flight and visa costs, though it's a sound combination if you have the time. The Egypt visa is about USD 30 for a single entry, e-visa or on arrival for many nationalities. Check the official Egyptian e-visa portal before you travel.

Hotels and Nile cruise prices

Hotel rates swing with season and location. Per room per night, expect roughly USD 40–80 at the budget end and USD 90–180 mid-range. Luxury starts around USD 250 and climbs past 500. Giza hotels with pyramid views cost noticeably more than equivalent ones in central Cairo. Luxor and Aswan get cheap in July and August because temperatures pass 40°C, though not around the eclipse.

Most Luxor to Aswan cruises run 3–4 nights, usually full board, with sightseeing sometimes billed separately. Per person per night, budget ships run around USD 60–90 and 5-star ships USD 100–200. Luxury boats start near USD 250. Browse the Luxor to Aswan cruises to compare ship grades.

Spend your extra money on the cabin. A river-view window beats a lower-deck porthole by a wide margin. A good ship and cabin matter more than a luxury hotel in Cairo, where you'll be out from morning until evening.

Dahabiyas are smaller, slower sailing boats and cost more. Lake Nasser cruises are a different route altogether, from Aswan towards Abu Simbel.

Very cheap cruise quotes usually mean an older ship moored three-deep at the dock, so you walk across other boats to reach yours. Check what sightseeing is included, and ask which ship, by name.

What a private tour price includes and what you pay on top

Hold this checklist up against any quote you receive.

Usually included:

  • Licensed Egyptologist guide
  • Private air-conditioned vehicle and driver
  • Hotels with breakfast
  • Airport transfers
  • Cruise accommodation and meals
  • Bottled water in the vehicle
  • Entry tickets, only if the package says so

Usually paid on top:

  • International flights
  • Visa, about USD 30
  • Most lunches and dinners on land
  • Drinks and tips
  • Optional extras such as the Luxor hot-air balloon or an Abu Simbel add-on

A guide costs less per head as the group grows, so a couple pays more per person than a family of four. Even so, an Egyptologist is the best-value line in the budget. Karnak and the Valley of the Kings make little sense without one.

When comparing quotes, ask four things. Are entry tickets included? Is the cruise full board? Are domestic flights included? Is the price per person sharing? A quote that looks much cheaper often just leaves out the tickets. If you'd like to price your own mix of cities, our tailor-made planner does that.

Entry tickets, including the higher Grand Egyptian Museum price

Egyptian Streets has reported that the Grand Egyptian Museum has raised its ticket prices. We won't quote a figure we haven't checked today, so see the official GEM website for the current foreign adult price. The museum has been fully open since November 2025, Tutankhamun galleries included, and it's separate from the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square.

Tickets are the line people underestimate. A first-timer working through Giza, Luxor and Aswan buys a lot of them, and over 10 days that often reaches several hundred dollars per person. Foreign prices are far higher than Egyptian prices and change often.

Two extras catch people out. Going inside the Great Pyramid and visiting additional Valley of the Kings tombs, Tutankhamun's among them, both carry separate tickets. Abu Simbel transport is priced on its own too. Check current rates before booking.

The GEM is enormous, so we usually give it half a day and go in the morning, before the tour groups stack up. Our Grand Egyptian Museum tour is built around that. If you're deciding between the new museum and the old one, we'd put the GEM first.

Tipping, food and other extras

Tipping, or baksheesh, is part of how service work is paid in Egypt. A typical range is around USD 10–20 per person per day, split between guide and driver, cruise crew and everyone else who carries or serves. That's a guide, not a rule. Carry small bills in Egyptian pounds and dollars, because change is hard to find.

Food is cheap if you eat where locals do. You can manage on around USD 10–20 a day that way, and mid-range restaurants run around USD 25–45. Tourist restaurants near the pyramids and on the Luxor Corniche cost several times more for the same plate.

Other extras vary. The Luxor balloon and the Abu Simbel add-on are priced separately, so ask for current rates. Cruise Wi-Fi and laundry add up slowly, and insurance is a separate purchase. Alcohol costs more than most visitors expect and isn't sold everywhere.

Keep a buffer of roughly 10–15 percent of your land costs for tips, drinks and souvenirs. It's always spent.

Skip the camel-ride add-ons from touts at Giza. Skip the "free" papyrus or perfume stops that end in pressure sales too.

When booking early saves money: the August 2027 eclipse

A total solar eclipse crosses Egypt on 2 August 2027, with Luxor and Aswan in the path and totality lasting around six minutes in the best locations, as Travel Noire has covered. Luxor hotels and cruise cabins are limited, river-view rooms most of all, and demand is already climbing. Late bookers pay more and end up in a hotel far from the river, if they find a room at all. We expect the cheap July–August Luxor pricing to disappear around the eclipse dates.

For eclipse week, book as soon as your dates are fixed. For the main season, October to April, booking around 4–6 months ahead is a sensible window for cruise cabins and Luxor hotels. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee.

Summer heat is the other issue. Luxor and Aswan often pass 40°C, so eclipse trips need early starts and fewer sites each day. Our guide to where to watch the eclipse in Luxor covers viewing spots.

To spend less, travel in late October or March–April and keep your flight dates flexible. UK arrivals are rising, according to TravelMole, which is one more reason prices are moving up. Is Egypt expensive to visit?

Not by Western standards. Food and local transport are cheap, and mid-range hotels are good value, while the Nile cruise, flights and entry tickets are the main costs. A private guide adds to the bill but also adds real value at the big sites. The total depends heavily on your hotel grade and cruise cabin.

How much are Grand Egyptian Museum tickets for foreigners?

Prices have recently increased, and we'd rather you see the current figure than a stale one. Check the official GEM website before booking. The museum is separate from the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and has been fully open since November 2025, with the Tutankhamun galleries included.

How much should I tip in Egypt?

Tipping is expected for guides and drivers, and for cruise and hotel staff. A typical range is around USD 10–20 per person per day in total. Carry small notes, since change is scarce. Restaurant service charges don't always reach the staff, so a small extra tip in cash is common.

When should I book an Egypt trip for the 2027 eclipse?

As soon as your dates are fixed, because Luxor and Aswan hotels and cruise cabins are limited around 2 August 2027. For other 2027 travel, booking roughly 4–6 months ahead is sensible, and earlier for peak-season cruise cabins. Expect temperatures above 40°C in summer, and plan your days around the heat.
