A Diversity of Marine Life

The coral reefs of Ras Muhammad are teeming with a dazzling array of marine life. Over 1,000 species of fish call these reefs home including hawksbill turtles, green turtles and dolphins. Hard corals, soft corals and sponges provide habitat for clownfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and pufferfish. Larger creatures such as whale sharks, mantas and barracuda are also frequently spotted. On a good dive, one can observe over 100 species of fish in a single dive.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

In addition to its abundant marine diversity, Ras Muhammad is an archaeological treasure trove. Ancient wrecks dot the reef as a testament to maritime trade routes of centuries past. It is both its natural beauty and historical significance that led UNESCO to designate Ras Muhammad National Park as a World Heritage Site in 1996. The park is now strictly protected to conserve its fragile ecosystems and unique underwater cultural heritage.

Ideal Conditions for Scuba Diving

With water temperatures averaging 26°C year-round, visibility that often exceeds 30 meters and calm seas, Ras Muhammad offers ideal and consistent conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling. Beginner and experienced divers alike are truly spoiled for choice with dive sites to suit all skill levels. Popular spots include Cathedral, Canyon, Small and Grand Coral Gardens where beautiful hard and soft corals create magical underwater scenery.

A Destination for Responsible Tourism

As ecotourism increases its popularity, Ras Muhammad has taken steps to promote sustainable practices. Visitor numbers are now limited and several rules are in place to protect the environment including prohibitions on anchoring, collecting corals or disturbing marine life. Tour operators work closely with park authorities to minimize any impact and educate visitors on conservation efforts. Together, we can all help ensure future generations can still experience this natural paradise below the sea.
