This 10-day tour trades the usual Nile-cruise route for a run into Egypt's Western Desert, pairing Cairo and Alexandria with Siwa Oasis and the Black and White Deserts.
After the Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the route heads to Alexandria for its Greco-Roman sites, then west via the El Alamein war museum toward Siwa Oasis.
Two days in Siwa cover the Temple of Amun associated with Alexander the Great, Cleopatra's Spring, the mud-brick town of Old Shali and a sunset on Fatnas Island, before the trip continues to Bahariya Oasis for the volcanic Black Desert and the wind-carved formations of the White Desert and Crystal Mountain on the way back to Cairo.
Because the second half of the trip is largely desert rather than temple sightseeing, the pace shifts from city touring to 4x4 travel and camping, a contrast the itinerary is built around.
- Nine nights' accommodation, mixing hotels in Cairo and Alexandria with desert camps in Siwa and Bahariya
- An Egyptologist guide and 4x4 vehicles for all desert sections
- Desert permits, entrance fees and bottled water throughout
International flights, the Egypt entry visa, personal expenses, tips and optional activities are not included, making this suited to travelers who want Egypt's deserts alongside its monuments rather than a Nile-cruise-only trip.
