About Abu Simbel Temples

Unveiling the Timeless Majesty of Abu Simbel Temples

Stand before Ramses II's colossal effigies and intricate carvings. Hewn from sandstone cliffs above tranquil Lake Nasser, the Abu Simbel Temples reveal ancient Egypt's engineering and artistry.

Two rock-hewn sanctuaries await: the Great Temple, dedicated to Ramses II with Ra-Horakhty, Amun, and Ptah, and the Small Temple, honoring Queen Nefertari with Hathor. Each space shows the ambition and devotion of one of history's most powerful pharaohs.

A visit here feels like stepping back in time, framed by a modern rescue that preserved this masterpiece for the world.

What Makes Abu Simbel Temples Special?

Power and purpose

Scale and detail set Abu Simbel apart. Carved during the reign of Ramses II (c. 1264 BCE), the temples commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh and immortalize his image with that of his queen, Nefertari. Their position in ancient Nubia declared Egyptian power and honored the gods.

A modern rescue

With the building of the Aswan High Dam, the site faced submersion. In a UNESCO-led effort, the complex was cut into thousands of numbered blocks, some up to 30 tons, moved 65 meters higher and 200 meters back, and reassembled over four years. This rescue is now part of Abu Simbel's legacy, pairing ancient achievement with modern preservation.

What to See at Abu Simbel

The Great Temple of Ramses II

Four seated statues of Ramses II, each over 20 meters high, dominate the facade. Smaller figures of his family flank them, all carved from the cliff to project royal power.

Inside, hypostyle halls and chambers glow with reliefs of military triumphs, notably the Battle of Kadesh, and scenes of devotion to the gods. In the innermost sanctuary, statues of Ra-Horakhty, Amun, Ptah, and Ramses II are illuminated by the sun only twice a year.

The Small Temple of Nefertari

Nearby stands the Small Temple, dedicated to Queen Nefertari and Hathor. Its facade features six standing colossi - four of Ramses II and two of Nefertari - notably equal in scale.

Within, refined carvings show Nefertari in divine roles beside Hathor, emphasizing her beauty, piety, and status. The style is graceful and intimate, complementing the Great Temple's power.

Historical Significance

Origins and purpose

The Abu Simbel Temples were carved from the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II (c. 1264 BCE). They commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh and immortalize his image alongside his queen, Nefertari. Their placement in ancient Nubia affirmed Egyptian dominion and served as a sacred tribute to the gods.

Relocation and rescue

For over three millennia, the temples stood as a testament to Ramses II's ambition and piety. With the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s, they faced submersion beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

UNESCO led a global effort to save the complex by cutting it into thousands of blocks, some weighing up to 30 tons, and reassembling it 65 meters higher and 200 meters inland. The operation concluded in 1968, took four years, and cost approximately 40 million US dollars, preserving these monuments for future generations.
