Expert Advice

Cruising the Nile

Everything you need to know about our dahabiya collection.

1
What is a dahabiya?
A dahabiya is a traditional twin-masted Nile sailing boat. Modern dahabiyas carry a handful of cabins rather than a hundred, sail under canvas wherever the wind allows, and moor at small islands and villages the large cruise ships pass by — which is why the pace is slower and the group far smaller.
2
How is a dahabiya different from a standard Nile cruise ship?
A standard cruise ship is a floating hotel running to a fixed engine-powered schedule with a large group. A dahabiya sails, stops where the wind and the crew choose, and reaches quiet moorings between Esna and Aswan that the big boats cannot use. The temples visited are broadly the same; the experience is not.
3
How long is a dahabiya cruise?
The dahabiya itineraries listed on this page mostly run as eight-day packages combining Cairo with the sailing, and there are shorter four- and five-day sailing-only options. Each cruise page states its own length and the exact stretch of river it sails.
4
Which temples does a dahabiya sail past?
Dahabiya itineraries cover the Luxor–Aswan stretch: Karnak and Luxor Temples, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut, Esna, the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae and the High Dam at Aswan, plus riverbank moorings that only a sailing boat can reach.
5
How many dahabiya Nile cruises can I choose from?
This page lists 14 dahabiya Nile cruises. Each one has its own page with the ship, the day-by-day itinerary, what the fare includes and the full rate table.
6
How much does a dahabiya Nile cruise cost?
The dahabiya cruises on this page start from US$445 to US$2,190 per person, depending on the ship, the season and the size of your party. Every cruise page shows its own published rate table.
