Planning Your Trip to Luxor

Everything you need to know about visiting Luxor with Travel Joy Egypt.

1
How much do Luxor tours cost?
Prices start from $95 per person for the East and West Banks day tour, and from $685 for the Luxor day tour from Cairo by plane, which includes the flights. Final prices vary with season, hotel class and group size. The Luxor price table shows the starting price of each tour it lists.
2
Are Luxor tours private?
Yes. Our Luxor tours are private and fully customisable, so nobody joins your party. Travel Joy Egypt specialises in private tours: your guide, driver and car are yours alone, and "group" means only the people you travel with. Tell us what you want to see and we adapt the day around it.
3
Do Luxor tours include entrance fees and lunch?
Entrance fees are included for every site in the itinerary, except tombs with their own ticket and optional extras such as the Karnak Open Air Museum. Lunch is included on the East Bank, West Bank, combined East and West Banks, Full Day and Cairo-to-Luxor day tours. The balloon ride comes with pre-flight refreshments only.
4
Is Tutankhamun's tomb included in a Valley of the Kings ticket?
No. A standard Valley of the Kings ticket covers 3 open tombs, and Tutankhamun's tomb is not part of it. Ramesses VI and Seti I also need separate extra tickets. On the Luxor Full Day Tour you pay for the Tutankhamun ticket yourself, so budget for it if you want to go in.
5
What is the difference between Karnak and Luxor Temple?
Karnak and Luxor Temple are separate East Bank temples about 2.7 km apart. Karnak is far larger, and the Avenue of Sphinxes once linked them. A standard Karnak ticket covers the temple grounds, while the Open Air Museum inside the complex costs extra.
6
What time does a Luxor hot-air balloon ride start and how long is the flight?
Balloon pickup comes about 1.5 to 2 hours before sunrise, which means roughly 4:30 to 5:30am depending on the season. The flight lasts 45 minutes, and the whole outing runs about 3 to 4 hours door to door. Flights go only when winds are safe.
7
What is the best time to visit Luxor?
October to April is the best time to visit Luxor, because the cooler months suit sightseeing. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the crowds at the busiest temples. Luxor can get extremely hot from May to September, so early starts matter in summer.
8
What should I wear to visit Luxor's temples and tombs?
Wear loose, lightweight clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. It keeps you cooler in Luxor's heat on every Luxor tour.
9
Are tips included in a Luxor tour?
No. Tips for your guide and driver are not included on our Luxor day tours, and tipping is customary in Egypt. Tips for the balloon pilot and crew are extra too. We send a tipping guide before you arrive, so you know what to expect.
10
Do children pay less on a Luxor tour?
Yes, on the Luxor Full Day Tour: children under 6 go free and ages 6 to 11 pay 50% of the adult price. Terms can differ on other tours, so check the tour you are booking or message us on WhatsApp before you confirm.
11
Do you need a ticket for the Colossi of Memnon?
No. The Colossi of Memnon have no separate entrance fee and can be viewed openly, unlike many other Luxor sites. They are one of the stops on our West Bank tour, so there is nothing extra to pay.

How to Choose Among Our Private Luxor Tours

Start with where you are staying or arriving from, because that decides which tour works. The table matches each starting point to a tour type and the traveller it suits.

Starting point Tour type Best for
Luxor hotel or Nile cruise East Bank, West Bank or both Travellers already in Luxor
Cairo Same-day flight, or 2 days Cairo visitors short on time
Aswan First-class train day trip Aswan-based travellers
Hurghada Private overland day trip Beach-resort guests short on time
Safaga Port Shore excursion to Luxor Cruise passengers
Luxor, continuing to Aswan Nile cruise toward Aswan Travellers who want temples by river

From Cairo you can take a same-day tour by plane or a 2 days tour.

If none of these tours fits your plan, we can plan a tailor-made Luxor and Egypt itinerary for you.

East Bank or West Bank: What Each Tour Covers

Karnak and Luxor Temple stand on the East Bank, while the Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temples lie on the West Bank, so each tour covers one side or both. UNESCO lists Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis as a World Heritage property, inscribed in 1979.

East Bank: Karnak and Luxor Temple

Our East Bank day tour focuses on Karnak and Luxor Temple. Karnak's Great Hypostyle Hall alone holds 134 sandstone columns, the tallest about 21 metres. Our Karnak Temple visitor guide and private tours explains what to see inside.

Karnak Temple complex on Luxor's East Bank

West Bank: Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut

Our West Bank tour gives the whole day to the royal necropolis and the mortuary temples: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Check Valley of the Kings tickets and which tombs to see before you go.

Both Banks in 1 Day

The full-day Luxor tour covering both Nile banks starts on the West Bank with the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple, then crosses the river to Karnak and Luxor Temple. Pickup is from your Luxor hotel or a docked Nile cruise ship.

Day Trips and Add-Ons From Luxor

These options go beyond the East Bank and West Bank tours.

Dendera and Abydos

This private day trip goes north from Luxor to Hathor's temple at Dendera and Seti I's temple at Abydos with an Egyptologist. See details and availability for the private Dendera and Abydos day trip from Luxor.

Edfu and Kom Ombo

This private day tour visits the Ptolemaic temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo, led by an Egyptologist.

Sunrise Hot-Air Balloon

The balloon lifts off at dawn from the West Bank and flies for 45 minutes over the necropolis. It is a separate booking from the ground tours. Before you pick a date, read our Luxor hot-air balloon guide for timing and safety.

Hot-air balloon over Luxor's West Bank at sunrise

Aswan by Train or Nile Cruise

From Luxor, a first-class train day trip takes you to Aswan and back in a single day. A 2 days Aswan and Abu Simbel tour suits travellers who are already staying in Luxor.

Going by river, a cruise from Luxor to Aswan takes 4 nights and includes full board and guided temple visits. Compare Nile cruises from Luxor to Aswan.

How Many Days Do You Need in Luxor?

One full day covers both banks on the combined tour. With 2 days, each bank gets its own tour, and a third day suits a temple day trip such as Dendera and Abydos. The sunrise balloon comes on top of these plans.

Check Availability for Your Luxor Tour
