Overview

Journey through ancient Egypt's wonders – Pyramids, a luxurious Nile cruise – and Turkey's captivating history in Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Ephesus on…

This 11-day tour pairs Egypt's Nile Valley with a wide swing through Turkey, moving from Cairo and a Nile cruise to Istanbul, Cappadocia and the classical ruins of Ephesus.

A Nile dinner cruise opens the trip, followed by the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum before a flight south to board a Nile cruise in Aswan. The sailing calls at Kom Ombo and reaches Edfu's Temple of Horus by horse-drawn carriage on the way to Luxor, where the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple fill the day.

A flight to Istanbul then opens the Turkey leg with Hagia Sophia, followed by a flight to Cappadocia for its rock-cut churches and fairy-chimney formations, and finally a journey west to the marble streets and Celsus Library of ancient Ephesus.

The trip covers three distinct Turkish regions, imperial Istanbul, volcanic Cappadocia and coastal Ephesus, alongside the Nile cruise, giving it more geographic range than most Egypt-and-Turkey pairings.

Included are an Egyptologist guide in Egypt, hand-picked luxury hotels and the Nile cruise, all domestic flights within Egypt, air-conditioned ground transportation, listed meals, and entry fees to every mentioned site. International flights, Turkish visa fees, personal expenses and gratuities are not included, so travelers should plan for those costs separately when budgeting the trip.

As night falls you step aboard a floating restaurant for a leisurely Nile dinner cruise, gliding past illuminated bridges and riverbank palms while a live band and a whirling tanoura dancer set the mood. It is a gentle, memorable welcome to Egypt and a relaxed first taste of the private guided journey that lies ahead over the coming eleven days.

A short drive brings you to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the vast new home of Tutankhamun's golden treasures and thousands of artefacts spanning Egypt's dynasties. Day 3: Fly to Aswan & Embark Your Nile Cruise

This morning you transfer to the airport for the short flight south to Aswan, Egypt's serene Nubian gateway on the Nile. On arrival you embark your Nile cruise ship, your floating home for the next three nights, and settle in before sightseeing begins. With your private guide you visit the High Dam, the mighty engineering feat that tamed the Nile's annual floods and created Lake Nasser, then move to the ancient granite quarries to see the Unfinished Obelisk, which still lies where it cracked over three thousand years ago, revealing how the pharaohs cut their colossal monuments. A short motorboat ride carries you to the island Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis and rescued stone by stone from the rising waters. You return to the ship for dinner as Aswan's white felucca sails drift across the sunset.

  • Aswan The High Dam — The vast dam that controls the Nile and created Lake Nasser.

You wake to breakfast on board as your Nile cruise glides gently downstream through some of the river's most timeless scenery, with palm groves, sandbanks and Nubian villages sliding past the sun deck. In the afternoon the ship moors at Kom Ombo, where your private guide leads you to its remarkable twin temple, standing dramatically on a bend of the Nile. Uniquely dedicated to two gods, the falcon-headed Horus the Elder and the crocodile deity Sobek, the temple is perfectly symmetrical, with duplicated halls, sanctuaries and courts running along its axis. You examine ancient carvings of surgical instruments and a calendar etched into the walls, and visit the adjoining museum where mummified crocodiles are displayed. As the light softens you return to the ship, dining on board while the crew casts off and sets sail toward Edfu.

  • Kom Ombo Temple — The symmetrical double temple shared between the gods Horus and Sobek.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight: Nile Cruise

After breakfast the ship reaches Edfu, and you travel the short distance to the temple by horse-drawn carriage, clip-clopping through the lively market town. Awaiting you is the Temple of Horus, the best-preserved ancient temple in all of Egypt and a genuine highlight of any Nile cruise. Buried beneath sand for centuries, it survived almost intact, and today you walk through its towering pylon gateway, past the great granite falcon guarding the entrance, and into shadowy halls where the walls still bear crisp hieroglyphs recounting the myth of Horus and his victory over Seth. Your private guide brings the sacred rituals and cosmic battles carved here vividly to life. You return to your floating home for lunch as the vessel continues its journey toward Luxor, relaxing on the sun deck through a lazy afternoon of ever-changing river views.

  • Edfu temple — The Temple of Horus, the most complete and best-preserved temple in Egypt.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight: Nile Cruise
Valley of the Kings

Today Luxor, the world's greatest open-air museum, unfolds before you. Crossing to the West Bank with your private Egyptologist, you descend into the rock-cut tombs of the Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs including Tutankhamun were laid to rest amid brilliantly painted burial chambers. Nearby rises the elegant terraced Temple of Hatshepsut, monument to Egypt's most powerful female pharaoh, set dramatically against sheer desert cliffs, and you pause at the towering Colossi of Memnon, two weathered stone giants that have guarded the plain for millennia. After lunch you cross to the East Bank for the vast Karnak Temple, an awe-inspiring complex of pylons, obelisks and a forest of 134 giant columns raised to the god Amun over two thousand years. As your Nile cruise chapter closes, you disembark and check into your Luxor hotel for the evening.

Your Egyptian adventure gives way to Turkey today. After a relaxed breakfast you transfer to Luxor airport and fly, connecting through Cairo, across the Mediterranean to Istanbul, the storied city that straddles two continents. On arrival your representative greets you and arranges a smooth private transfer to your centrally located hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to rest, stroll the atmospheric streets, or enjoy your first taste of Turkish cuisine and a glass of çay at a Bosphorus-side café. Straddling Europe and Asia, Istanbul has been the capital of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and its skyline of cascading domes and slender minarets promises an entirely new chapter to your journey. Settle in and rest well, because tomorrow the imperial treasures of this magnificent city await your private guided exploration.
