MS Esplanade Nile Cruise
Overview
Sail Luxor to Aswan on the 5-star MS Esplanade Nile Cruise. 4 & 5-day temple itineraries, pool, spa & Egyptologist. From $971 per person. Book with Travel Joy.
The MS Esplanade Nile Cruise is a five-star floating retreat that glides between Luxor and Aswan, pairing 55 polished cabins with hand-led temple tours.
After thirty years of guiding travelers along this river, I still rate the MS Esplanade among the most rewarding mid-luxury vessels on the Nile. She carries just 55 cabins and suites, so the sun deck never feels crowded, and the warm timber interiors give the public lounges a genuinely calming, residential feel rather than the polished-but-cold look of larger boats.
You sail the classic southern corridor — Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan — the very stretch where the great temples crowd closest to the water.
The Esplanade runs two core programs. The four-day route departs Aswan every Wednesday and the five-day route leaves Luxor every Saturday, so you can match the trip to your flight schedule rather than the other way around. An eight-day combination is also possible for travelers who want the full river.
Cabins are air-conditioned with individual controls, panoramic windows, satellite LED televisions, mini-bars, in-room safes and bathtubs — small comforts that matter after a hot morning in the Valley of the Kings.
Onboard you will find a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a spa with steam, sauna and massage, a poolside bar, a proper restaurant, a lounge bar, a library and games corner, a boutique and a 24-hour on-call clinic. A resident Egyptologist sails with each departure, and our private guides keep groups to a maximum of eight so questions actually get answered at the temple walls.
This cruise suits couples, families and small groups who want five-star comfort without a megaship price tag, and who care more about unhurried mornings at Karnak, Philae and Hatshepsut's terraces than about endless onboard entertainment. Booking through Travel Joy Egypt means private air-conditioned transfers, hand-picked guides, honest pricing and a team that has walked every one of these sites — explore more options on our Nile cruises page.

Itinerary

Karnak TempleDay 1 (5-Day) — Luxor: Karnak & Luxor Temples
Board the MS Esplanade before lunch and settle into your cabin with a traditional welcome. In the afternoon your guide leads you through the vast Karnak Temple Complex, walking the Avenue of Ram-Headed Sphinxes and the Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 columns. You then visit Luxor Temple as the late sun warms the stone, admiring the statues of Ramses II and the surviving Sphinx Avenue. Return aboard for tea, dinner and your first night moored in Luxor.

Valley of the KingsDay 2 (5-Day) — Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Kings, then sail to Esna
An early start takes you across to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, where three painted royal tombs reveal the ancient road to the afterlife. You continue to Hatshepsut's terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari and the towering Colossi of Memnon. Back aboard for lunch, the Esplanade begins sailing south, passing villages and green banks before transiting the Esna Lock. An optional sunrise balloon flight over Thebes is available. Dinner and overnight while cruising toward Edfu.
Day 3 (5-Day) — Edfu & Kom Ombo: Temples of Horus and Sobek
After breakfast, ride a horse-drawn carriage to the Temple of Horus at Edfu, the most completely preserved temple of the ancient world, its walls carved with the legendary struggle between Horus and Seth. Return aboard and sail to Kom Ombo for lunch. In the afternoon you explore the unusual twin temple shared by Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the Elder, study the carved medical instruments, and visit the Crocodile Mummification Museum. Dinner and overnight sailing on to Aswan.

Philae TempleDay 4 (5-Day) — Aswan: Philae Temple, High Dam & Unfinished Obelisk
This morning you tour the High Dam with its panoramas over Lake Nasser, then take a short motorboat to the island Temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis and rescued stone by stone in the great UNESCO campaign. You also visit the Unfinished Obelisk in its ancient granite quarry. Return aboard for lunch, with the afternoon free for a felucca sail or an optional Nubian village visit. Dinner and overnight moored in Aswan.

Abu Simbel TemplesDay 5 (5-Day) — Aswan: Disembarkation & optional Abu Simbel
Enjoy a final breakfast aboard before disembarking in Aswan. Travelers with time to spare can add an early excursion to Abu Simbel, where the colossal rock-cut temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari face the rising sun above Lake Nasser. Our team handles your onward transfer to the airport, station or East-Bank hotel, closing the journey exactly where your next plans begin.

Philae TempleDay 1 (4-Day) — Aswan: Philae Temple, High Dam & Unfinished Obelisk
Board the MS Esplanade in Aswan before lunch and relax into your cabin. In the afternoon your guide takes you to the High Dam for its sweeping views of Lake Nasser, then by motorboat to the graceful island Temple of Philae devoted to Isis. You round out the day at the Unfinished Obelisk, lying where it cracked in its ancient granite quarry. Return aboard for dinner and your first night moored at Aswan.
Day 2 (4-Day) — Kom Ombo & Edfu: sailing the timeless Nile
The Esplanade sails north in the early light. Your morning visit is the double temple of Kom Ombo, honoring Sobek and Horus the Elder, with its rare carved surgical reliefs. In the afternoon a horse-drawn carriage carries you to the magnificently preserved Temple of Horus at Edfu, dedicated to the falcon god. Back aboard, the boat continues toward Luxor with dinner and an overnight cruise along the river.

Valley of the KingsDay 3 (4-Day) — Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Kings & Hatshepsut
This morning you cross to the West Bank, the world's greatest open-air museum. You descend into three royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, then admire the elegant terraces of Hatshepsut's temple beneath the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari and pause at the seated Colossi of Memnon. Return aboard for lunch and a restful afternoon on the sun deck. Dinner and overnight moored in Luxor.

Karnak TempleDay 4 (4-Day) — Luxor East Bank: Karnak & Luxor Temples, disembarkation
After breakfast and check-out you explore the immense Karnak Temple Complex, the largest religious site of the ancient world, then the elegant riverside Luxor Temple in the heart of the modern city. With your last temple behind you, our team arranges a smooth transfer to the airport, train station or your East-Bank hotel, completing a compact but complete southern Nile journey.
